Businesses across Westminster have been playing their part in ensuring that their customers can continue to enjoy the amazing hospitality in a COVID-secure way. From today, the Government has made it a legal requirement for businesses operating in close contact environments to enforce social distancing and the rule of 6.

Social gatherings of more than six people are prohibited by law. Venues are allowed to have more than six customers at a time in total, but each group of up to six must maintain social distancing from each other and must not form larger groups once there. Full details can be found here, including a complete list of exceptions.

Further to this venues must maintain records of customer contact details and from Thursday 24 September display NHS QR code posters. Using NHS QR codes will help businesses meet the new legal requirement to record the contact details of customers, visitors and staff on their premises. Read how to create a coronavirus NHS QR code for your venue.

Following the launch of the NHS COVID-19 app on 24 September, customers and visitors will be able to check-in on entry with their phone instead of filling out a check-in book or tool specific to a business. For more information on how the NHS app works visit the .GOV site here.

Services included in the new legal requirements are:

  • hospitality, including pubs, bars, restaurants and cafés
  • tourism and leisure, including gyms, swimming pools, hotels, museums, cinemas, zoos and theme parks
  • close contact services, including hairdressers

The regulations will be enforced by Local Authorities, who have the power to issue fines of up to £1,000 for venues that are failing to comply, or the police as a last resort. Fines will rise to up to £4,000 for repeat offenders. For full details on the new legal requirements please visit the .GOV site here.

For a range of common questions on the requirements please visit the .GOV site here.

If you need to print out NHS QR code posters and don’t have immediate access to a printer then visit one of our Libraries with printing facilities. They will be happy to print these posters at no charge up until the end of next week. You will need to bring some documentation, like a rates bill, to show you’re a Westminster business.
